Private midwife

Antenatal care is the care provided by professionals during your pregnancy. Our extensive network of private midwives and obstetric consultants are here for you.

Antenatal Care from a Private Midwife

We have an extensive network of private, independent midwives to choose from, who will expertly guide you through pregnancy and early motherhood.

Independent midwives offer a personal touch, allowing you to form a special bond and enjoy continuity of care in your own home.

Our independent midwives will take time to gain a thorough understanding of your needs, and become a familiar face.

Antenatal Care from a Private Obstetric Consultant

You can choose to have all or part of your antenatal care provided by the obstetric consultant of your choice.

The support and care provided by an obstetric consultant will take place in a clinical setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Independent Midwives

A private midwife is a fully qualified midwife who has chosen to work independently outside the NHS in private setting. Private (independent) midwives are still regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and are obliged to keep their practice up to date and act only within their scope of proficiency as midwives.

Many families hire an independent midwife so they can benefit from a personalised, one-to-one private service in the comfort of their own home.

Women and their partners can build a trusting relationship with the same midwife throughout the pregnancy and when their baby is born. This can help them to cope better with the challenges of pregnancy and early motherhood.

Private midwives are on call for the women they care for on a 24/7 basis during antenatal and postnatal periods. Antenatal and postnatal appointments by private midwives can often take place in the evening or on weekends. Appointment times can be longer, giving women and their families more time to discuss matters or seek advice.

Your birth will take place in your chosen hospital and you will be supported by your selected obstetric consultant.

Your independent midwife will be able to provide all of your antenatal and postnatal care, and will be on call throughout your pregnancy, but will not be able to accompany you in labour.

At the point of contractions starting, your obstetric consultant will be available to contact and ensure you have a smooth and well-supported birth.

If you choose to have all of your antenatal care with your obstetric consultant, we recommend you still have an antenatal visit with your selected private midwife.

This will allow your midwife to understand your needs and get to know you in order to provide the best possible postnatal care.

For low-risk mothers, a private midwife can provide most of the care but for instances when there is underlying medical condition or complicated pregnancy, you may need to see an obstetrician.

Your private midwife will understand your needs by taking your medical history and will arrange a referral to a private obstetric consultant if required.

The right chemistry is an important factor for many women in choosing the right private midwife. Other women may have specific needs such as the availability of the midwife at certain times, areas of expertise such as caring for women with previous traumatic birth experience, infant feeding problems or use of aromatherapy in pregnancy.

At Pregma, you will receive a free initial ten minute consultation with your chosen midwife with no obligation to take up the service. However, you can always contact us and ask for an alternative midwife if you find she is not the right midwife for you.

Book a free consultation using our contact form.

After your initial call to our Enquiries team, we will arrange a free ten minute consultation with a specialist. This gives you the chance to speak with a relevant practitioner about your individual needs before deciding on your care.

Whether you have a question about our services or just want to find out more about how we can help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
