Oral Glucose testing

What is oral glucose testing?

Oral glucose testing is commonly used during pregnancy to check for gestational diabetes, a temporary form of diabetes that can develop in expectant mothers. This condition occurs when the body struggles to regulate blood sugar levels due to hormonal changes.

The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is typically performed between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. The test involves drinking a sugary solution, followed by blood tests at timed intervals to see how well the body processes glucose.

If blood sugar levels remain too high, it may indicate gestational diabetes, which can increase risks for both mother and baby, including high birth weight, preterm birth, and complications during delivery. Early detection is crucial for managing the condition through diet, exercise, or medication if needed.

Proper management of gestational diabetes helps reduce risks and ensures a healthier pregnancy. After birth, blood sugar levels usually return to normal, but women who experience gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

How can it help?

Identifies high blood sugar levels that could pose risks to the mother and baby.

Helps reduce risks like high birth weight, preterm birth, and delivery difficulties.

Ensures the mother’s body is processing glucose properly, preventing complications like high blood pressure or preeclampsia.

Helps doctors recommend dietary changes, exercise, or medication to manage blood sugar levels effectively.

Identifies women at risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life, allowing for early intervention.
